The ONE WORD Challenge
But then life happens. Kids happen. Chaos happens. And somehow our desire and passion to move closer to God becomes simply a desire to survive our circumstances. We get tired and weary, and we often fall short of our ambitious New Year’s goals.
Maybe I’m wrong, but that was my story for the past few years.
Last week, I was sitting with some women in my fellowship group, and they were talking about this ONE WORD challenge that they have been doing. Basically, the challenge is this: pray steadfastly for God to send you the one word that He wants you to focus on this year. Once you have your word, find the Bible verse that you feel best coincides with what God is telling you. Memorize that verse.
Forget making scattered resolutions and putting more on your plate than you can chew. Just focus on the one thing that God wants you to focus on this year. When you align your heart and mind with God, the rest will fall into place.
Pastors, I think this is a great exercise to share with your congregation. Get them excited and rejuvenated about God’s hand in their lives.
I’ll leave you with one example:
A good friend of mine just got married, started her own business, and started volunteering at a ministry to help single, pregnant women. She prayed for her word, and God sent her “trust.” She told me that she believes that with all of the changes happening in her life, God is calling her to remember just one thing this year – trust in His promises and provisions.
Her verse is Deuteronomy 31:8: The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
So, what is the word that God wants you to remember throughout the highs and lows of this year
